1) How the hell do I perform a Page Up / Page Down in Leopard besides using the 2 fingers to scroll up /down

2) How the hell do I perform a highlight on the entire line of text similar to the one in Winblows ( Shift + Home Keys)

3) How the hell do I disable the Auto-Updates for Mac? It’s eating up the bandwidth to download crappy app updates.

Windows Recovery Console

A very nifty tool especially if you screw up your winblows. However, in normal case, you would need the installation CD in order to boot into the recovery console. What happens if you misplaced your CD? Cry? Yea go ahead.

But wait … You can boot into the recovery console without the freaking CD. The only way that i known of so far is to install the console into your winblows before you screw it up. Here’s how:

1) Log into your winblows
2) Get to know your CD/DVD ROM drives
2) Load up the Winblows installation CD, close off anything that loads up from the CD
3) Go to Start -> Run and type “x:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons” without quotes and where X is your ROM drives.
4) A window will pop up requesting for updates, ESC to ignore and it will proceed with the installation
5) Wait for installation success message and done.

The Recovery Console now is available for selection during the boot menu.

Installing new harddisk for YOU

You bought a new latest/biggest/faster/noisiest/sata/pata harddisk.
You anxiously installed it in your PC.
You boot it up and the BIOS showing your newly harddisk listed during the startup.
You jumped for joy.
You waited for the winblows to load.
You doubled-click My Computers to double check the newly installed harddisk is there.
You SAW NOTHING THERE.
You CRIED & CURSED the PC shop owner thinking that he has cheated You selling a dupe one. Preparing to pluck out the harddisk and some noob troops to invade the shop with your sharpening mouth …….

WAIT YOU FOOL.

You Relax.
You right-click My Computers.
You click Manage
You go Storage -> Disk Management and You will see your new disk there.
You right-click your disk and You create Partitions.
You format the Partition after You allocate all the size.
You close the screen and go back to the My Computer and shout for joy.

ALTERNATE ENDING.

You don’t know what is partition.
You don’t know how to create one.
You call your techie friend please or find uncle google to help you through.
You are not wasting my time and energy on how to guide you what is, and how to create a partition. haha

Firefox vs Opera – My Stories

Both browsers are excellent within their own application boundaries, no doubt about it. Here’s what i think after using both browsers for a period of time.

Opera 9.x
It’s a very fast browser. It loads fast.
Low memory usage, doesn’t lag much on slow PC’s especially running external applications e.g. flash, pdf
Good placement of keyboard shortcuts ( well, at least for me )
Simple overall design with support of themes
The image is enlarged together while zooming the entire page.
Customisable panels / buttons
Lousy widgets
Basic support of foreign language ( non-english )

Firefox 2.x
Extensions !!! Life saver mini-apps
Better RSS feeds support
Acceptable memory consumptions, but tends to use up a lot of memory space after surfing large websites.
Acceptable performance during usage
More websites are supported in Firefox
More foreign language are supported

Conclusions.
I started to use Opera for a year or two, i like the performance but kind of fed up of the unsupported websites. Soon, i started to use Firefox. Well, in my opinion, Firefox is more powerful / configurable with the extensions. Without them, i guess the Firefox is just another browser. I kind of missing the feel of Opera and i’m very used to the Opera keyboard shortcuts. So, what i did actually is to blend best of both world into the Firefox. I restructured the Firefox to look like Opera including the keyboard shortcuts through an extension.

So what i have now is, some kind of browser with Opera interface running with really useful “widgets” and suffering from some performance hit. For a better surfing experience, this is well worth it.

Fix your MBR for Windows 2000 / XP

Scenario:
1) You’re using Windows 2000 / XP
2) You installed a 3rd party boot loader e.g. GRUB to dual boot your OS OR
You somehow screwed up your boot menu and windows wont boot

Solutions:
1) Boot your Windows 2000 / XP installer CD
2) There’s a menu where it allows you to enter the ‘Recovery Console’ by hitting the ‘R’ key. Hit it.
3) You will end up in a DOS like environment. Log in into it using your windows username / password.
4) Run the following command (without quotes)
–> “fixboot”
–> “fixmbr”
5) Cross your fingers and restart. Your ntldr / boot.ini / boot menu should appear.

Warning:
Be sure to know what are you actually doing. Please do not follow this guide blindly. I screw up my MBR before using the same way ( with logical explanations of course ).

Note:
If you’re using Vista boot menu and need to revert back to the 2000/XP boot menu (ntldr), this guide might not work for you. Vista has a special tool to revert back to the 2000/XP boot menu (ntldr).

Tips of the Day – IIS Powered by .NET

You created / hosted .NET Web Services in your IIS but it won’t run.
Reasons could be the following ::

1) You installed .NET Framwork 1.1/2.0 then only IIS
2) It’s working before but it won’t now for no apparent reasons.

Solutions ::

1) Launch command prompt (cmd.exe) and point your current directory to;
– C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322 ( If your .NET 1.1 web services is screwed )
– C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727 ( If your .NET 2.0 web services is screwed )
2) Run “aspnet_regiis -i” ( without quotes )
– This command will “re-register” / rebind / relink your IIS to .NET once again
3) Run your Web services again.

Tips of the Day – Show Desktop

If you accidentally deleted your “Show Desktop” link before from your quick launch ( i know i do ), here’s the content of the “Show Desktop” file. Just open a notepad, cut and paste the text below and save it as “Show Desktop.scf”. Put the file back into the quick launch or anyplace you like and you’re done.
